"Blues For An Alabama Sky" takes place in the early 1930's in Harlem.  It is a treacherous time for many Americans as the Great Depression is rapidly ramping up, but it is particularly dangerous for the people of color who inhabit this play.  The costuming reflects the relative security they have experienced in this particular part of New York until this particular time.  Angel is seen in evening wear and smart dresses and suits befitting her job as a nightclub singer and because of her association with Guy, a flamboyant costume designer who indulges her whims.  Sam, a doctor, and Delia, a social worker, dress professionally due to the nature of their jobs. Leland's attire suggests the formality of his conservative, southern background.
